The White House Cult

by J. Orlin Grabbe

Hillary Rodham Clinton is obsessed with all aspects of Whitewater. As reported in the Washington Times, her office "ordered the Resolution Trust Corp. in October 1993 to advise her of all media questions about an RTC probe of a failed Arkansas thrift at the core of the Whitewater investigation, including inquiries on Webster L. Hubbell's ties to suspected criminal wrongdoing" (April 10, 1997).

The order to keep Hillary informed of every media aspect, "according to former RTC officials, included questions on the agency's probe of Madison Guaranty Savings and Loan Association, pending criminal referrals in the case, the Rose Law Firm's involvement, Mr. Hubbell's or Mrs. Clinton's connections to the failed thrift, and Mr. Hubbell's ties to a possible conflict of interest in the RTC probe."

The same day this record of her obsession came to light, Hillary went on WAMU talk radio with host Diane Rehm to deny she authorized any hush money payments to Webster Hubbell, calling it "part of the continuing saga of Whitewater--the never-ending fictional conspiracy that honest-to-goodness reminds me of some people's obsession with UFOs and the Hale-Bopp comet some days.''

Hillary is obsessed with fictionalizing Whitewater, and she compares it to an obsession with UFOs and Hale- Bopp. Ergo, Hillary is obsessed with UFOs and Hale- Bopp.

The revelation that the White House is a cult explains much of what has been happening: the communal drug and money rituals ("coffee-klatsches"), the submersion of the individual to the group ("it takes a village. . ." to do this or that), the collective amnesia ("I can't recall"), the obsession with the numinous (channeling sessions with Eleanor Roosevelt), group paranoia and conspiracy theorizing about outsiders ("media food chain", "communication stream of conspiracy commerce"), the voyeur-at-the-keyhole mentality ("clipper chip"), and hidden sources of believer manipulation (Mochtar Riady and assorted foreign intelligence agents of all stripes).

Obsession with the Hale-Bopp comet? Like workers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena? No, unfortunately, the White House cult more closely resembles the Heaven's Gate group--obssessed with "attaining the next level" in a haze of drugs and alcohol. But, unlike the computer-literate Heaven's Gaters, the less technologically sophisticated White House is mesmerized by goose-stepping down the "information superhighway" and marching across "a bridge to the 21st century".

Hillary is already said to be working on a new recruitment manual for the cult. It's called "The Protocols of the Elders of Zaftig".
